Substance and Symbol in Japanese Architecture
Workshop - November 30, 2019
Kyushu University Itō Campus, Jonathan KS Choi Cultural Centre
Which messages were conveyed through building type and formal detail in traditional Japanese timber architecture? Why were some elements continued more or less without changes over centuries while others were dramatically changed or newly introduced within very short periods of time? What can materials and manufacturing technologies tell us about the intentions that shaped specific works of architecture? How were sites and buildings invigorated through human performance? How did these factors change over time? Lastly, how are historical buildings re-read against fundamental changes to the socio-political context?
This workshop sets out to explore these questions. Five speakers will present papers on case studies spanning the Medieval to Modern periods and discussing examples including Zen monasteries, Shinto shrines, and castle donjons.
Funding is provided from the Startup Kakenhi Grant (研究活動スタート支援) for the academic years 2018 to 2019.
